The Bulgarian Riviera started to gain popularity among tourists in the late 20th century, particularly after the fall of communism in Bulgaria in 1989. Before that, the coastal region was primarily a vacation destination for Bulgarians. As Bulgaria opened up to international tourism, the Bulgarian Riviera began to attract a growing number of foreign visitors. The development of modern infrastructure, the establishment of new resorts and hotels, and the promotion of the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage further contributed to its popularity. Today, the Bulgarian Riviera remains a popular destination for tourists from various countries seeking a combination of sun, sea, and cultural experiences.

Getting to the Bulgarian Riviera

You can take a bus or travel by train from neighboring countries such as Romania or Turkey.
If you’re coming from somewhere else, you will most likely fly. There are Burgas and Varna airports for those arriving by plane. Or you could fly to Sofia airport and then rent a car or take a bus. It takes about 5 hours from Sofia to reach the Bulgarian Riviera.

Gems of Bulgarian Riviera

1. Varna

Biggest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, offering cultural attractions, shopping, and a lively beachfront. While in Varna you must go take a walk at Primorski Park, which is situated alongside the coast of the Black Sea. If you are in Varna with your kids be sure to visit the Varna Aquarium, or kind of hidden small Museum of Natural History, also there is Varna Zoo and Varna Dolphinarium at the territory of the park. Afterward, take your little ones to Varna’s Amusement Park which is part of Primorski Park, they will love it! Situated at the city center Varna’s Archaeological Museum is a must-visit place, there is a collection of gold and precious items recovered from the Varna Necropolis which makes it the oldest gold treasure in the world. Afterward, if you exit through the museum’s west gate and cross the street (apparently the government has put a fence in the middle of the street so that people would not cross it), you will see copper domes shining at the end of Bratya Shkorpil street. That is the Varna Cathedral which is the largest church building in Varna and the third largest cathedral in Bulgaria. About fifteen minutes to the southeast of the cathedral lurks the remains of Roman Thermae (Varna Roman Baths) which dates to the late 2nd century AD, so don’t skip it if you are in the neighborhood.

Varna Airport is one of the two available airports on the Bulgarian Riviera, from which you can take a taxi, a bus, or rent a car to go to various places on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast.

2. Burgas

Burgas is a beautiful city located on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. Known for its stunning beach, rich history, and vibrant culture, it attracts both tourists and locals alike. Be sure to explore Morska Gradina (Sea Garden), a large park with numerous cafes, flower gardens, and beautiful walkways. Stretching along the coast which is kind of similar to Varna’s Primorski Park. We liked the Sea Garden more because it’s better maintained, a bit smaller and you could walk to the Black Sea whenever you wanted, while in Primorski Park you had to look for a path leading to the sea. While on the beach, walking to the end of The Pier of Burgas is a must and as a bonus, there’s a small sea tower overlooking the coast of Burgas.
If you are interested in museums Archaeology, History, Natural History, and Ethnography Museums are your choices. Prices are very low and if you are planning to visit more than one museum, there are even special offers for them. For more information visit their website. St. Cyril and St. Methodius Cathedral, with its distinctive architecture, is also worth a visit. And for some unique experiences take a taxi from Burgas, come by car, or even take the eco line bus from the beach to visit the salt pools which is good for your health. For maximum efficiency relax in the salt pools for 20-30 mins (it is risky for your health to spend longer), next the curative mud which you rub yourself in, then you have to wait for the mud to harden and then walk across to the ocean to wash off! The entry price is 5 LEV.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its well-preserved ancient architecture and charming old town. Get lost in Old Towns’ cobbled narrow labyrinth of streets, while admiring its traditional houses with beautiful balconies, ancient ruins, and churches such as the early 14th century Church of Christ Pantokrator or remains of the Church of Saint Sophia.

After that experience Bulgarian cuisine at one of many restaurants with a stunning view of the Black Sea. Our recommendations would be Familia Fish & Grill (go there at sundown) or Emona with its good food, smiling and attentive staff, and amazing view of the Black Sea.

It’s a fairly easy hike of 2200 meters in length one way. At the end of the path a 12th-century medieval Kaleto fortress can be found or what’s left of it. As officials state reconstruction of the fortress is planned.

A place where the Black Sea is divided into North and South. Cape Emine is characterized by its sheer cliffs rising 60 meters above sea level and offering enchanting views of the vast sea. Be sure to visit Emona village for some lunch at Villa Emona. North of Emona village and Cape Emine a secluded Irakli Beach is located, known for its untouched natural beauty.
Overall if you are looking to have some rest from crowded resorts these places are the way to go. The nearest places that Cape Emine and Irakli Beach can be reached are Obzor to the north and Sunny Beach or Sveti Vlas to the south.

10. Sozopol

A historic town with a picturesque old town, beautiful beaches, and an artistic atmosphere. While walking on an old town’s cobbled streets be sure to admire the ruins of fortress walls and towers, and the entrance gate of Apollonia. And after you get “full” of Sozopols beaches and many bars and restaurants, do not forget to visit Ravadinovo Castle, an enchanting castle built by Georgi Kostadinov Tumpalov, his family, and the workers from the neighboring village of Ravadinovo. In the castle also known as “In Love with the Wind”, all is done in a way that would make you feel like in a fairytale.

Enjoy your holiday!
